Lest you think we're cooler than we actually are, keep in mind that there are at least a dozen White House Christmas parties. Still, we were pretty excited to be invited to one.
Our path: Enter east wing, walk down the First Lady's Hall, scan the titles in the library, ascend the staircase to the East Room and sample an exquisite display of food, chat with co-workers, try out some of the (very old) furniture in the Red Room, admire the White House Christmas tree in the Blue Room, sample another exquisite display of food in the State Dining Room, pause in the foyer to listen to the military band play Christmas music, descend the staircase, have picture taken with President and Mrs. Bush, exit east wing.
When Mrs. Bush introduced us to the President, she mentioned that Will was a student at Yale Law School to which he replied, "Not a lot of people who think like we do up there." Will and I paused and looked at each other, unsure of what he was alluding to. A few seconds passed. It registered with Will and he replied, "Yeah, got to be careful who you share your thoughts with." Phew. A potentially awkward moment averted. Thanks Will.
